    Rachael Treasure: The Cattleman’s Daughter

rachael-1ANZ rights in Rachael Treasure’s exciting new novel, The Cattleman’s Daughter have just been acquired by Ali Watts for Penguin Australia. The planned date for publication is October, 2009.

Ali describes the novel as ‘breathtaking’, and said: ‘This is a richly rewarding read that examines the lives of strong, contemporary women, but has the timeless appeal of ‘the romance’ of the stockman.

‘It’s a story of family, love, hardship, struggles — and, of course, horses. There is something in this novel for everyone, and if ever there was a book to take Rachael to even greater heights, it’s this one.’

Set in the beautiful snowgum country of the Victorian Alps, Rachael Treasure’s fourth novel, The Cattleman’s Daughter is a journey of love, determination and self-discovery.

Robust country girl, Emily Flanagan and her country music star brother, Sam, have been raised in the rugged Dargo High Plains by their Mountain Cattleman father, Rod, but despite the beauty of their High Country heritage all of them are lost in life.

In the city, Sam is being consumed in a world of drugs, money and wild women. Emily, buried in the ordinariness of suburban motherhood, misses her mountains and is locked in an unhappy marriage to her wayward truckie husband, Clancy.

Their father, Rod, has also reached rock bottom after two decades fighting the government for the right to graze cattle on land that has been in the Flanagan family’s care for 170 years.

In a bid to reclaim some sense of herself and support her father, Emily enters a wild bushman’s horse race at the Mountain Cattlemen’s Get-together, only to be seriously injured.

Climbing back from the precipice of death, Emily is re-elivened with a new perspective on life. However she is about to tackle her biggest challenge yet.

In the city parliament, as a bill to evict the cattlemen from the mountains is about to be passed, Emily finds herself falling in love with the ‘enemy’, a government man, Luke Bradshaw. In his job as a new Parks Ranger, Luke leaves Emily mesmerised, but the match is doomed.

On her journey, just as she sees that the land and Luke are the key to her life, Emily faces losing it all when the most savage of bushfires comes sweeping through the mountainside…

Rachael Treasure’s own experience riding horses and droving cattle in the snow gum country of Eastern Victoria with her husband and his family enrich the telling of The Cattleman’s Daughter and this novel promises to deliver not just romance and a grand sense of place, but also food for thought.

I dropped into Dymocks this afternoon only to find out you have two new novels coming out this year. It made my day! I really enjoy the way you express yourself with such frankness and attention to detail. Unfortunately, the sad circumstances you describe about rural hardships must touch so many of our outback farmers.
In many ways, you are becoming the ‘voice’ they so desperately need. Thanks in advance Rachael.

I’m a country girl but I think your books reach a much larger audiance. They give you the strengh to follow your dreams and the courage to sometimes take a chance and go against the grain. Thanks so much.

      Hi Rachael,
I hope you’re glad to hear that your books are read in Germany as well – when i spent half a year in New Zealand last year i found your book “jillaroo” by chance in a second hand shop – i loved it, because it was so close to real Australian farm life, written as they really act and talk as i found out when i spent half a year in Australia afterwards and was working on a cattlefarm in Queensland – i fell in love with Australian farm life, but unfortunately had to go back to Germany to do my agriculture studies, as it’s far to expensive to study in Australia as a foreign student – but your books keep me dreaming and i look forward to hopefully being able to get your newest one very soon – so i can once again dream of coming back to Australia very soon after finishing my studies – Thank you for that and good luck for you, your family and farm!

      hi Racheal

i love your books and can’t wait to read your next. Your novels inspire me so much and i sat down during my holidays and read one of your books because i couldn’t put it down. I got to love your books just by one night asking my sister if she had any books for me to read. i have read all of your books like the rouseabout, the stockman and the jillaroo. your books show the true country way and how you can work on a farm and still have fun. you are my favourite author and most the kids in my class always wonder how i can read so much. i just say you would understand if you have read her books.

      Georgie

      your books are AWESOME!!!

      G’Day Rachael,

So far I have read 2 of your books, the rouseabout and the cattleman’s daughter. I cant read the other two until I buy it myself, which is pretty bad cause I really want to read them now. I am 15 and I love working on my farm. I have attempted to write my own story about farm living but I have got no ideas for the main story line. I will get there in the end. Please, keep up the good writing.
      Rachael :)

Just read “The Cattleman’s Daughter” and thoroughly enjoyed it.

It took me back to my Summer holidays spent bush walking on the Bogong and Dargo High Plains, where the Hereford Cattle were seeking shelter from the hot sun amongst the Snow Gums.

I know that Wonangatta area was completely overgrown last time I was there. Surely there needs to be a balance to caring for the high country… this story was a great way of showing there is a way to reach compromise.
